About the doctor...

Dr. Donald Johnson is the only dentist in North Idaho that has the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Qualified Dentist designation.  He also is a Diplomate in the American Sleep and Breathing Academy.  These are qualifications that any dentist treating sleep apnea and/or snoring should have.

At Northwest Treatment Center For Snoring & Sleep Apnea, we maintain the highest levels of accreditation and pursue ongoing education to stay abreast of the latest trends in the medical field.  Read on to learn more about our staff's experience and training.

Hi,  I’m Dr. Don Johnson, and I have practiced in the Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls, Idaho area for over 35 years--since 1978.  I have to admit something.  For too many of those years, I struggled with patients who had daytime tiredness, difficulty staying focused,  and  mild depression!  Worse yet, many didn’t even sleep in the same room as their bed partner because of the loud snoring.

It may have looked like they had a great life, but it wasn’t so hot for many of them.  It never dawned on me that as I was treating patients who had sleep breathing disorders and I was looking in their mouth and throat right at the cause of their tiredness and snoring troubles.

Their airway was too small, they had scalloped tongues, they snored,  they had ground down teeth, they had tori (bony bumps on the inside of the lower jaw bone), they had TMJ problems such as clicking jaw joints, and they had many other symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).  The problem was that I wasn't trained (most dentists aren't either) in recognizing and/or treating OSA.

All That Began To Change The Day...

I had a meeting with a pioneer in the treatment of snoring & sleep apnea. I was fascinated by what he was telling me and let him know I wanted to learn all he knew about OSA.  I was fortunate to have him become my mentor and train me in his revolutionary alternative method of treating snoring and sleep apnea.

He had me take a home sleep test which is used to test for OSA so I was familiar with how patients would be tested.  It was very easy to use and not nearly as intimidating as having to go to a hospital sleep lab to get a test.  I told him I have seen CPAP masks and I thought that no one would ever be able to sleep with one strapped on their face.  And it turns out that they can't--that might be you!  Studies show that less than 30% can.

The next part of my training was to be fitted for an oral appliance so I could understand what my future patients would experience using an oral appliance.  The fitting of the appliance and sleeping with it was much more pleasant than I expected.  And hundreds of my patients have had the same experience.  My training since then has included hundreds of hours of continuing education with the top doctors in the field of sleep breathing disorders as well as hundreds of hours of independent study.

They No Longer Have Sleep Apnea!

I started to treat my patients.  Now they can go to bed and sleep straight through.  I can’t even begin to tell you how their lives have changed after being treated for snoring and sleep apnea.  Their minds are more clear and they can focus easily with little effort.  Many can even see that they had been depressed from poor sleep.  And best of all…they sleep in the same bedroom as their bed partner!  Hundreds of them!

My Goal To Is To Help As Many People As I Can

First, you need to be tested and diagnosed with OSA.  Then you need to stop snoring, and get your sleep apnea treated now!  90% of those with OSA are currently undiagnosed--it could be you!   You deserve to feel rested after a good night's sleep and your partner deserves better than to hear you snore and stop breathing all night. To help educate the public about the effects of snoring and sleep apnea,  I do free consultations in my office for those in Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, and Post Falls who want to learn more about their condition and our treatment.

I was born and raised in northwest Montana on Flathead Lake.  I went to college in Minnesota where I met my wonderful wife, Jennie.  After graduation, I attended graduate school to pursue an advanced degree in mathematics.  Jennie and I got married and moved to California where I went to work as a radar systems engineer on military aircraft.  Later, we moved to New Jersey where I worked as a computer systems engineer on radar systems found on Navy ships.  We moved again, this time to Delaware where I began a career as a pension consultant.   It was there that I decided to become a dentist, so we moved back to Minnesota where I graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

After graduating, I worked as an instructor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and practiced dentistry in downtown Minneapolis.  But my love for the Northwest brought us to the Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls area to open my practice and I have been at the corner of Government Way and Neider Avenue near Costco for over 35 years--since 1978.

I founded the Northwest Treatment Center for Snoring & Sleep Apnea to help patients who snore and have OSA.  I also founded Heartfelt Headache Relief to help patients who have chronic headaches caused by unbalanced forces in the way their teeth come together.

When I am not treating patients, my wife of 50 years and I spend time golfing, skiing, hiking, boating, and traveling – especially to visit their three amazing daughters and our grandkids.
