About the doctor...

Dr. Donald Johnson is the only dentist in North Idaho that has the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Qualified Dentist designation and is also a Diplomate in the American Sleep and Breathing Academy.  These are qualifications that any dentist treating sleep apnea and/or snoring should have.

MEET  DR  JOHNSON

Hi,  I’m Dr. Don Johnson, and I have practiced in the Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls, Idaho area for over 40 years--since 1978.  I have to admit that for many of those years, I did not recognize that many of my patients had sleep apnea.  All dentists have patients who have daytime tiredness, difficulty staying focused,  and  mild depression!  Many patients have trouble staying awake for their dental appointments!  Worse yet, many don’t even sleep in the same room as their bed partner because of the loud snoring or the noise from a CPAP machine.

Their airway was too small, their tonsils were too big, their tongues were scalloped, they snored, their teeth were ground down teeth, they had tori (bony bumps on the inside of the lower jaw bone), they had TMJ problems such as clicking and painful jaw joints, and they had many other symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).  Most dentists aren't taught how to recognize OSA.  And most aren't taught how to treat OSA.  Membership in the ASBA and/or AADSM at least indicates that your dentist is serious about learning how to recognize and treat OSA.

I met with a pioneer in the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea and was mentored by him for years.  I started to treat my patients and now they can go to bed and sleep straight through.  I can’t even begin to tell you how their lives have changed after they have been treated for snoring and sleep apnea.  Their minds are more clear and they can focus easily with little effort.  Many can even see that they had been depressed from poor sleep.  And best of all…they sleep in the same bedroom as their bed partner!  Hundreds of them!

I was born and raised in northwest Montana on Flathead Lake.  I went to college in Minnesota where I met my wonderful wife, Jennie.  After graduation, I attended graduate school to pursue an advanced degree in mathematics.  Jennie and I got married and moved to California where I went to work as a radar systems engineer on military aircraft.  Later, we moved to New Jersey where I worked as a computer systems engineer on radar systems found on Navy ships.  We moved again, this time to Delaware where I began a career as a pension consultant/actuary.   It was there that I decided to become a dentist, so we moved back to Minnesota where I graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

After graduation, I worked as an instructor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and practiced emergency dentistry in downtown Minneapolis.  Our love for the Northwest brought us to the Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls area to open my practice and I have been at the corner of Government Way and Neider Avenue near Costco for over 40 years--since 1978.

I founded Heartfelt Family Dental and still help patients with their dental needs.  I founded Northwest Treatment Center for Snoring & Sleep Apnea to help patients who snore and have OSA.  I also founded Heartfelt Headache Relief to help patients who have chronic headaches caused by unbalanced forces in the way their teeth come together.

When I am not treating patients, my wife of 50 years and I spend time golfing, skiing, hiking, boating, and traveling – especially to visit our daughters and our grandkids.
